US Ambassador Begins Middle East Tour to Push for Gaza Ceasefire

Washington – The US Ambassador to the United Nations began a Middle East trip on Sunday in a new diplomatic effort to stop the fighting in Gaza and make progress toward a two-state solution. This tour comes in the wake of escalating violence between Israel and Palestinian armed factions.
During his visit to Israel, the ambassador met with several senior Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz. This visit comes amid continuing security tensions in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
The United States has expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence and called for restraint from all parties. A State Department spokesperson said: “We are working closely with our Israeli and Palestinian partners to de-escalate the situation.”
The US ambassador is also expected to visit the Palestinian Authority and other Arab capitals during his several-day tour. These diplomatic efforts come at a critical time as concerns grow about the outbreak of a new Palestinian uprising.
The recent escalation in violence has resulted in dozens of Palestinian deaths and hundreds of injuries, as well as casualties among Israelis. Estimates indicate that approximately 200,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes.
The international community is seeking to halt the escalation and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which already suffers from a tight Israeli blockade. The United States emphasizes the need to reach a comprehensive political solution that guarantees Palestinian rights and enhances Israel’s security.
